How to Manually Install a Meta (Facebook) Pixel

The Pixel Formerly Known as Facebook

If you're an online marketer or an entrepreneur, you're probably familiar by now with the term "Meta Pixel." Essentially, the pixel is a tool that helps you track the actions people take on your website after clicking on a Facebook ad. By installing a Meta pixel (or Facebook pixel, as it was previously known before the organizational name change in 2021) on your website, you can better understand your audience, optimize your ads, and improve your overall advertising performance. While there are plenty of tools and platforms that offer Meta pixel installation services, it is thankfully a relatively easy process to manually install one yourself.

1. Create a Meta Pixel

The first step in installing a Meta pixel is to create one. If you don't already have a Facebook account, you'll need to create one before proceeding. Once you're logged in to your Facebook Ads Manager account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Events Manager
  2. Click on Connect Data Sources and select Web
  3. Click on Meta Pixel and Connect
  4. Input your pixel name
  5. Enter the target website URL to install the pixel

2. Install the Pixel Code

The next step involves manually adding the pixel code to the target website. This might seem intimidating (especially the code part), but follow these steps for a pain-free installation:

  1. Go to Events Manager
  2. Click on Data Sources
  3. Select the pixel that you want to set up
  4. Click on Continue Pixel Setup
  5. Select the Meta pixel and click Connect
  6. Now select Install Code Manually
  7. Copy the pixel base code
  8. Find the header of your website, or locate the header template in your CMS or web platform
  9. Paste the base code at the bottom of the header section
  10. Click on Continue to save the changes
  11. Click on the Open Event setup tool to add events for your pixel to track

If you're struggling to find the pixel code, it should look something like the following code below:

3. Check the Pixel is Working

Now that the pixel is installed and events have been added, you'll want to make sure the pixel is working. There are tools such as the Test Events tool which can check things for you, or follow the steps below to do so manually:

  1. Go back to the Ads Manager account
  2. Click on Events Manager
  3. Look for the target pixel's name and check that it's status is active, which indicates that your pixel is tracking data
  4. Alternatively, in the Events Manager, go to the Diagnostics tab to see and resolve any problems in pixels that have been setup.

And that's it! By manually installing a Meta pixel on your website, you'll now be able to track invaluable data about your audience and use that data to improve your advertising performance!Stuck trying to install a Meta Pixel or need a deeper explanation as to what it does?
